The Great Gatsby Chapter 1
Chapter one of "The Great Gatsby" introduces the characters and introduces the settings. Nick Carraway is the narrator in the book.
Nick Carraway explains where he is from and where he moved to. Nick is a man that comes from a wealthy family from Midwest and moved to West Egg and gets a small house between big mansions after he got home from the war. He's a very reserved man who keeps his opinions and judgments to himself, whom he learned from his dad growing up.
In chapter one he goes visits his Cousin Daisy across the bay. Daisy is a beautiful woman who comes from wealthy family and is married to Tom Buchanan. Daisy doesn't really care about others but herself and we as readers don't really get to know her inner thoughts. She has little daughter who she hopes to be "a beautiful little fool".
Now Tom is a very bad person who is aggressive and assertive. He is also racist and used to play football in collage. Tom comes from a very wealthy family too and is from East Egg. In chapter one Tom talks about a book he read and thinks white people should be careful about other races. Tom also is cheating on her wife and has another woman in New York.
Another character we get to know about or meet is Jordan Baker. She is Daisy's and Tom friend. Jordan is golfer and shes very competitive. Throughout the book, Nick and Jordan start show a mutual attraction.
While they are at dinner, Tom gets a call from his his mistress and he decides to answer the call, getting up from the table and leaving. Daisy followed him inside. When Nick tries talking to Jordan she shushes him, telling him she wants to hear the conversation that is going on inside. Nick finds out Tom has another woman because Jordan tells him thinking he already knew.
At the end of the chapter when Nick arrives at his home, he gets to see his neighbor Jay Gatsby for the first time who is staring out across the bay at a green light shinning from Daisy's home.
